Lago di Garda

The town of Garda itself is scenic, relaxed, and with a tourist atmosphere that is somehow different from Italian magnet-areas farther south. However it's the fascinating little bergs within bus or train or boat(!) range, that add the most interest for us. Sirmione (pictured with its purple grandeur) is an example. Here are vineyards to explore, maybe on rented bikes, wines to taste. All these riches are a short bus-ride (or a long walk) from our place for the week.

Pechereia is closer yet, a medium stroll or maybe a water-bus away. There is an elegance  visible, not quite Venetian, not quite Milanese. Certainly it feels a little like Austria, its western neighbor and onetime ruler: atmosphere to absorb and ponder.

From here to the south of France is a punishing number of hours by rail; we will pause to rest a few days in

And this early video from 2006 shows our own town for the week. Our apartment overlooks the plaza with umbrella'd tables, and, maybe, a new Karaoke guy holding forth.
